Vietnam Airlines Review: Economy Class

Aircraft Boeing 777-200.
Class Economy, seat 11K.

Seat pitch and width 34 inches between rows of seats, 17.7 inches between armrests. Seat recline is six inches.

Seat configuration 3-3-3.

Luggage allowance 20 kilograms checked baggage, plus one piece of cabin baggage up to seven kilograms. I board with two cabin bags but storage space is ample and nobody makes a fuss.

Scheduled flight time Eight hours, 30 minutes.

On-time performance 35 minutes late departing.

Aircraft condition The interior suggests this aircraft has done plenty of miles but it's clean and neat.

Service Brisk and effective but unsmiling. With every seat occupied, the crew works diligently to keep everyone happy. Before takeoff I'm handed a sealed, refreshing towelette.

Comfort Good considering this is a full economy-class flight. Most of the passengers are Vietnamese and there is a pervasive air of calm despite the crowded conditions. At the check-in desk I manage to secure exit-row seating, which gives me all the legroom I need.

Food Lunch is a salad with prawns followed by a choice of stir-fried chicken in hoisin sauce with steamed rice or beef goulash, with strawberry cheesecake for dessert. The stir fry is slightly bland with just a hint of spice but the rice is moist and fragrant. Beverages include soft drinks, still water, Vietnamese beers and red and white wines under the Outback label.

Entertainment The entertainment system is out of action throughout the aircraft for the entire flight. Had it not been, several current hit films might have been shown on the overhead screens. Cabin crew respond by dispensing alcoholic refreshments on demand from the galley.

Flight frequency Vietnam Airlines flies from Sydney and Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City five times a week. This is the only direct service from the east coast of Australia to Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Airlines Review: Business lounge, Ho Chi Minh City International Airport

Having left chilly wintery US and the air-conditioned plane, the humidity hits us as soon as we step out and walk into Ho Chi Minh City International Airport, where our group meets with the last member of our party. Now that we're all together, we head for the air-conditioned comfort of the Vietnam Airlines business lounge where we'll hang out until our next flight (approximately 1 hour) with Cambodia Angkor Air to Siem Reap, Cambodia. There's wi-fi available in the lounge, so I spend a few minutes emailing Jac to tell her I've arrived safely in Vietnam. I also can't resist sending her photos of my business class meal & my Vietnam Airlines review. She replies: "So jealous!"

Our group are still getting to know one another, so it's nice to sit, relax and chat. We'll be together for the next 10 days.

Lots of seating available in the lounge

There are power points between these seats so you can charge up phone/laptop/tablet

Massage chairs in the corner

Inexplicably, despite feeling like we've done nothing but eat, we're ready to eat again. Just a light meal, of course. My eyes light up when I see the plate of bananas among the other tropical fruits. There's nothing like the sweet, stumpy plump bananas of South East Asia. As stated in my other Vietnam Airlines Review, I ate more bananas than any other food item while in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Coffee and tea

Alcohol station - there is also a drinks fridge with soft drinks, juice and bottled water

Noodle selection

I'm most interested in the hot dish selection and don't hesitate to lift lids to check out what's inside. The braised pork with quail eggs looks interesting, as do the fried pork noodles.

But my choice is pork mince porridge, which turns out to be gloriously good. I spoon over some of the braised chicken and ginger with plenty of gingery sauce. I could easily eat multiple bowls of this but seeing as we're about to get on another smaller plane, it's probably not a good idea.

When I was younger, I never had the slightest desire to travel. Just wasn't interested. I think the opportunities my blog has given me to visit new places has awakened the latent traveller in me. I love it! Whether travelling with alone, with Jac or with a group of friendly strangers, I'm always excited about the photographic and culinary opportunities that await, and the chance to experience something new. Taking photos of my food & wirte Vietnam Airlines review on the plane and in the business lounge was fun, but there was so much more to come as the adventure unfolded...

Vietnam Airlines Review: Flying business class

I recently went on a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam courtesy of Vietnam Airlines, the lone blogger with a group of travel writers/journalists.

The next day, I made my way to the airport, arriving a little after 8am where I met our chaperone for the trip, Burt of Vietnam Airlines, and the rest of my travelling companions. In addition to Burt, there were five other people in our little group - all guys, plus me.

This was my first time flying business class, and it proved thrilling and an eye-opener. I can't imagine flying like this all the time... Here's my Vietnam Airlines Review for business class.

Business class seats with pillow and blanket

There's so much leg room my (admittedly short) legs don't even touch the seat in front of me!

Feet don't touch! Shortly after this photo was taken for my Vietnam Airlines Review, I slipped my shoes off. These are my super-comfy Brooks walkers, bought on my previous trip to Sydney. Please ignore the daggy and unevenly rolled up jeans

The seats are wide and adjustable so you can relax and sleep at more reclined positions than in economy. The foot rest is automated and extends flat in the "bed" setting so you can lie down. It's not a full lie-flat bed but this is the best seat on a plane I've ever been in - no complaints here!

Adjustable seat controls

As soon as we're seated, we're given refreshing cool towelettes and offered orange juice, apple juice or champagne. We're given a Clarins amenities pack containing a toothbrush and toothpaste, earplugs, comb, a tiny tube of Clarins moisturiser, shaving set, blindfold, shoe horn and shoe-shine kit (do people really use these?). Next, we are presented with the menu so we can choose our hors d'oeuvre and main course and my eyes open wide when I see the feast that awaits. Looks like business class and gluttony go hand in hand.

Complimentary Clarins pack

Cabin crew come round with a rack of magazines and a selection of Australian and Vietnamese newspapers.

Choose your reading material

The in-flight entertainment is via a touch screen console, with over 20 Hollywood movies, plus sports documentaries and episodes of Just for Laughs. I realised recently that the only time I watch movies these days is while I'm flying - I've watched the last couple of Harry Potter and Twilight films on planes.

The music selection includes lots of best of albums (I set up a playlist with the greatest hits of Eurythmics and Kylie Minogue) but if you're really into your music, you'd be best off taking your iPod along. In your seat there's a power point and USB port which works for keeping your iPod/iPhone charged up. I see others around me whip out their iPads and laptop computers as we get settled into the flight.

In-flight entertainment - movie selection

When lunch service begins, my table is gently folded out for me (the crew have spotted a clueless business class newbie a mile away!) and a tablecloth is laid upon it. Then a tray is placed before me, with salt and pepper shakers and metal cutlery and toothpick in a rolled cloth napkin. I don't have long to wait before the amuse bouche appears. Actually, it's a trio of amuse bouches.

Amuse bouche

Next course is the hors d'oeuvre: smoked duck breast, Hungarian salami and two very plump grilled prawns, served with salad. Just as I'm wondering what the butter in the little dish is for, I am offered a selection of breads which includes white and wholemeal rolls and garlic bread. As I pick up my bread roll to butter it, I realise with surprise that it's warm.

Hors D'oeuvre: smoked duck breast, Hungarian salami and grilled prawn, served with salad

Next, zucchini parmesan soup, a creamy, well-seasoned soup topped with chopped chives and gooey parmesan cheese.

Zucchini parmesan soup

For my main course, I've chosen the wok-fried snapper in black bean sauce with fried rice with egg. The vegies are a little too floppy for my liking but the rice is very good and I'm impressed with the snapper - two thick fillets in a sticky dark sauce.

The main course dishes are cleared away, and we are presented with fruit, cheese and crackers, free to select whatever we like.

Cheese, crackers, fruit and vegetables

Silver service fruit. The female cabin crew members look very graceful wearing the áo dài, Vietnamese national costume.

I'm getting full by now, so I choose a wedge of Brie with crackers, a little watermelon and a couple of strawberries.

My fruit, cheese and crackers

Last of all is a dessert tray with chocolates, cakes and black forest ice cream with raspberry coulis. Once again, I'm restrained in my selection, choosing just one of the chocolates to finish my meal. Coffee and tea are offered.

Dessert selection

Once we're all done, the dishes and trays cleared and our tables folded away, the lights are switched off. It's time to relax, watch a movie, or set your seat to "sleep", which is what most of us do to pass the time.

After all that eating, it may seem crazy that another meal is served two and half hours before landing, but the flight is almost 9 hours after all! Out comes the fold-out table again (I'm prepared this time and have managed it myself) and another crisp, fresh tablecloth. I've chosen the stir-fried chicken with shiitake spring onion, egg noodles with oyster sauce. It's served with salad, fruit salad and more warm bread. The chicken thigh pieces are succulent, the mushrooms juicy. Like the vegetables in my earlier meal, the Asian greens are a bit overdone but I enjoy the salty springy noodles.

More drinks, tea and coffee are offered, and a final round of the moist towelettes to freshen us up.

Second meal: stir-fried chicken with shiitake spring onion, egg noodles with oyster sauce

My Vietnam Airlines Review for the service was fantastic. The main meal was a banquet! I suppose there isn't much else to do up there! I felt utterly pampered and other than eventual boredom and wishing we'd hurry up and get there already, the almost 9-hour journey was travelled in comfort. Now that I know what I'm missing out on, every time I fly economy in future I will remember the luxury of business class and think of the passengers in the front of the aircraft with envy. Have you travelled business class before?

Get Cheap Flights to Ho Chi Minh: Method 2

Adjusting Your Travel Preferences

Fly out on the right day.

Sure, leaving on a Friday promptly after work or heading on vacation on a Sunday after a relaxing weekend might be ideal, but it turns out these are the absolute worst times to book flights to Ho Chi Minh. High air traffic on these days means that airlines jack up the prices. Plan your flights to Ho Chi Minh so that you depart on a Wednesday if possible, followed by a Tuesday or a Saturday. Mid week departures are the slowest, so carriers know they will have to accept lower costs in order to fill their seats.

Fly out at the right time.

As with most of these search related parameters, turns out what we want the least is what makes the cheapest flights to Ho Chi Minh. The earlier your leave on a flight, the cheaper it will be. Red eye flights to Ho Chi Minh (in the middle of the night) are by far the cheapest, followed directly by early morning flights to Ho Chi Minh. Although you might luck out on a rare evening steal, typically the later in the day you depart, the more expensive your ticket will be.

Stick to economy.

Possibly the most obvious way to save money on a ticket is to simply sacrifice the desire for creature comforts. You can save hundreds of dollars by flying in 4th or 5th class, rather than opting for 1st or 2nd with any airline. Although leg room and the dinner menu might be lacking, your wallet will thank you for the hefty amount of money you will have saved.

Keep your dates flexible.

Many airlines have specific requirements for a minimum and maximum total number of days to be spent in a location in order to get the best deal. For the cheapest flights to Ho Chi Minh, stay for a minimum of 2 nights and a maximum of 30. Try to stay at Ho Chi Minh City over a weekend, as flights that bookend a Saturday night are cheaper than those that lack a Saturday stay.

Indirect flights to Ho Chi Minh are the way to go.

Although layovers can be a hassle - especially if you have several of them - flying indirectly to your location decreases the total cost of your flights to Ho Chi Minh. Direct flights to Ho Chi Minh are in high demand, and are therefore made more expensive by airlines. Keep at least one layover open as an option, and prepare to save more money by considering multiple layovers for a single flight.

Look into neighboring airports.

The nearest major airport is a mere 20 minutes from your house, but several smaller airports are located within an hour’s drive. Rather than relying on the nearest or largest airport only, look into neighboring airports as well. These smaller airports aren’t controlled as heavily by large airline carriers, and have more ability to adjust their tickets and offer lower prices. Spend a few extra dollars to drive to an airport further away, and you may save several hundred on your flight bill.

Don’t be afraid of the little guy.

It’s easy, and sometimes perceived as safer, to rely on large airlines as the sole means of air transportation. Instead of only considering large airlines, consider using small budget carriers. These small, area-specific airlines may offer lower prices as an incentive to choose them over the big guys. Do a search of budget carriers in your area or destination and see if they also offer lower prices.

Look into alternative flights to Ho Chi Minh

Slightly different than flying indirectly with layovers, if you aren’t in a time crunch consider taking alternative flights to Ho Chi Minh. If you can get a cheaper flights, then book two separate flights. Breaking up your travel will lengthen the amount of time you have to spend journeying to Ho Chi Minh, but it could be one of the best ways to manage saving money.

Why Booking Vietnam Ticket Airline for Your Holidays?

Most travellers place Vietnam in a comparison chart as they decide where to go next: will Thailand, Laos, Hongkong or Vietnam be worth my precious vacation? Will my kids have fun in that place? Will I encounter any problems as a single woman traveler? We will list down the top 10 reasons why you should plan Vietnam ticket airline for your upcoming trip.

WHY BOOKING VIETNAM AIRLINE TICKET #1: Breathtaking landscape:

There are no matches to Niagara Falls, Sydney Opera House or the Grand Canyons. However, Vietnam is a truly hidden gem that only those visiting the country themselves will be able to tell. To put it correctly, Vietnam is not short of World Heritage Site: Halong Bay, Phong Nha Ke Bang caves, Hoi An Ancient Street and Cham Islands are all recognized for their intense beauty. However, it is the bits and bites of the non-heritage site that will surprise you further. Da Lat, for example, is too picturesque to miss. French style villas sitting next to a pine forest, bordered by strawberry garden- you feel like Europe but the market scenes speak otherwise. Keo pagoda in Thai Binh province also exemplifies well the no-name beauty of Vietnam: feel the serenity of a religious place, situated amidst greeneries of paddy farms. Whether a must-see site or an off-the-beaten-path attraction, you will not be disappointed.

Book Vietnam Ticket Airline for an Exceptional Experience

We usually receive a sudden flood of questions and comments asking the same good old thing: "Where is a good place for a Vietnam holiday that mixes city excitement and getting away from it all?" So, our staffs have recently travelled to Vietnam with Vietnam ticket airline and share their top tips on perfect place to go.

For a great mix of relaxation and entertainment, Vietnam holidays at Cua Dai Beach immediately jumps to mind. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in central Vietnam and not too overrun by tourists.  It’s also just four kilometres away from Hoi An and you could stay at either location, or spend a few nights at each if you want to vary your surroundings.

There is a range of accommodation to suit all budgets here. Prices range from around $25 per night including air conditioning and your own bathroom, up to outstanding accommodation for $200 per night or less if you fancy some luxury.

Flight Tickets to Vietnam: Natural Wonders

After spending a good amount of money on flight tickets to Vietnam, we set off for Halong Bay, which is north east and approximately 4hrs drive from Hanoi. During the drive our guide was happy to answer all the questions we could throw at him about Vietnamese history, culture, traditions and beliefs.

The journey passes through lots of small villages and huge rice fields. Along the way we stopped at a huge store where they make embroideries, enamelware, statues, souvenirs, paintings and other crafts on site.

As we neared Halong Bay we could start to see the peaks of the limestone islands that make up the spectacular Unesco World Heritage Site of Vietnam. We drove down to the harbour to an amazing site of traditional junk boats both moored up and sailing around the islands.

Hanoi Holidays

Hanoi, Vietnam, has held its title as capital for more than 1,000 years. It's where old and new Asia meld. You can hear it amid the cries of street hawkers and swarms of motorbikes, see it in the French colonial architecture and feel it in the tai chi on the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake. If you're feeling game, jumping on the back of a taxi motorbike is a good introduction to the road rules. Let your tastebuds be tingled by the food and allow the tropical heat to defrost you if you're taking a break from colder climes. Hanoi has several charms – you might enjoy the wander to find them...
