The streets where milk flower abound such as Phan Dinh Phung and Hoang Hoa Tham, and the National University’s campus don beautiful cloaks of white when the season of milk flowers returns.

But compared with other flowers like bauhinia variegate and lotus, milk flowers do not importune the photographers, because the trees are tall and the  flowers are always blossoming high above the ground. However, every year, people still flood to Hanoi to see milk flowers blossom. So, if you want to enjoy this beautiful scenery, you should book UK to Vietnam flights as soon as possible.

After first appearing in the 1978 film "Hanoi - the nesting season " by female director Duc Hoan, the song "Milk Flower"  quickly found a permanent  place in Vietnam’s musical repertoire. Lyrics speak of the separation of lovers and the expectations of love  of a young girl, but   sentences like "the milk flower’s sweetness fills the city  every night " makes audience think of autumn in Hanoi because only the capital city has this pervasive scent of milk flowers. "Milk Flower " composed by  Hong Dang will live forever in the heart of  Vietnamese as an icon of autumn. Musician Hong Dang says: “Many songs make a splash and then forgotten. The song Milk Flower has been performed by so many singers. It has become deeply rooted in people’s hearts. As the song lyrics go:

Old memories linger somewhere
The mutual friends
The little ways
The milk flower’s sweetness fills the city every night
Maybe you’ve forgotten me
Maybe... you’ve forgotten me ".

The fragrant “milk flower” has been the symbol of autumn in Hanoi for generations. Blossoming when fall arrives, it delights everyone who loves the city. Ms Thanh, a Hanoi resident says:“I love Hanoi with all its memories of my childhood and family. I still remember my school days and poems about the flowers blossoming in Hanoi’s streets.”

Milk flower trees line the streets, perfuming the night air and creating an area of romance for young couples out on a date. Hanoians say when the  milk flowers are in bloom, it’s the best time to book UK to Vietnam flights and visit the capital city.

Book UK to Vietnam flights for visiting Dong Van, Ha Giang
Spring and fall are the best months for travel in Ha Giang; the weather is temperate and generally clear.

The easiest way to get to Ha Giang is by private car or motorbike from Hanoi. For public transportation options, forgo the clunky sleeper train-bus combination that we used and instead take one of six daily buses from Hanoi’s My Dinh bus station straight to Ha Giang town. The buses leave between 4 and 6 a.m., and the seven-hour trip costs 120,000 Vietnamese dong (about $6.35 at 19,000 dong to the dollar). From there, public transportation is extremely limited, and it is advisable to rent a car or motorbike.

Getting around

There are several companies that offer tours of Ha Giang by motorbike or car that begin and end in Hanoi and include an English-speaking guide, accommodations, meals, permits and entrance fees. Most can be customized to include local market days if they coincide with a trip. Prices are per person based on a group of four, and exclude airfare. They cite their rates in U.S. dollars.

  • Exotissimo Travel (84-8-3827-2911; exotissimo.com) offers a five-day loop by car through Ha Giang, including visits to the towns of Dong Van, Meo Vac, Lung Cu and Yen Minh, for $560.
  • Free Wheelin’ Tours (84-4-3926-2743; freewheelin-tours.com), a small company that specializes in sustainable tourism coupled with local development projects, offers an eight-day custom motorbike tour of the northern highlands, including Ha Giang, for $960.
  • Offroad Vietnam (84-9-1304-7509; offroadvietnam.com) has eight-day custom motorbike trips around the northern highlands, including Ha Giang, from $880 to $1,120 depending on the quality of motorbike rented, or by car for $1,140.
  • Karst Plateau Travel (84-91-545-8668; karstplateau@gmail.com) is the company run by Hoang Tuan Anh, who arranges car tours leaving either from Hanoi or Ha Giang town and can be booked to lead them himself — a special treat since he’s a native of the area and knows it well. A five-day tour leaving from Hanoi starts at $500.

Where to stay

In Dong Van, the 16-room Rocky Plateau Hotel is basic and comfortable, with doubles for 300,000 dong. Reservations can be made through Mr. Anh (84-9-154-8668; karstplateau@gmail.com).

In Ha Giang town, Huy Hoan Hotel (14 Phuong Nguyen Trai; 84-21-9386-1288) is a modern, clean option with large rooms and private bathrooms. Doubles are 250,000 dong.

Twenty-five miles south of Ha Giang town, Pan Hou Village (84-21-9383-3565; www.panhouvillage.com) is a charming eco-resort with 30 rooms in traditional stilt houses; doubles start at $57, including breakfast. Beautifully designed with a restaurant, bar and small spa, it’s a good base to use for exploring the northernmost parts of Ha Giang.

1. Hanoi

Hanoi is arguably Asia’s most charming capital city. Hanoi, meaning ‘where the river bends’ is a city of broad, tree-lined boulevards, elegant French villas and colonial-era buildings painted in muted hues of yellow and orange. It is also one of Asia’s greenest cities with an abundance of parks and lakes as well as a host of cafes and art galleries and an Old Quarter steeped in history. The city’s most interesting places for tourists are all relatively close to each other, which makes it easy to enjoy the best parts of the city on foot or by cyclo. You could probably explore well-known landscape in Hanoi such as Literature Temple, One Pillar Pagoda, Sword Lake, West Lake, History Museum, Flag Pole, Ancient city…

Drift along riverways and canals, through floating fruit and flower markets, find bird sanctuaries and hidden beaches, and enjoy the dream while you can…

Book Flights to Vietnam and Travel on a Budget

Vietnam is one of the most popular budget travel destinations in the world.  Although one can have a very lavish vacation in Vietnam, it is still quite easy to travel on a tight budget after your flights to Vietnam. The easiest way to travel frugally is to know how and where to find the bargains!

Food and Drink

Relatively speaking, food in Vietnam is cheap, especially if you avoid expensive restaurants which are generally targeted towards tourists.  One of the cheapest meals you can find is banh mi (a Vietnamese sandwich).  They are filling, non-fussy, and tasty!  Another budget food option is to visit a Com Binh Dan – a type of street food establishment with a wide array of dishes.  For less than 50000 VND, you can have a hearty and authentic lunch.  Less than $2 will also get you a hot bowl of pho, a cold glass of Vietnamese iced coffee or fresh cut fruit at the market!  The great thing about eating on a budget in Vietnam is that you don’t sacrifice taste and quality.  If you’re looking for cheap international eats, the backpackers’ area of Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi is the place to go.  Many small establishments and restaurants cater to the tourist crowd and provide no-fuss basic international meals at a very low price.

When purchasing bottles of water, try to buy them at small stores or stands.  Bottles of water at hotels or restaurants can be very expensive.  Another cheap option to hydrate yourself at a restaurant is to order tra da, or iced tea.  It’s very refreshing on hot days and usually safe.  A glass of tea will cost much less than bottled water.  Although alcohol is very expensive in Vietnam, beer and vodka is quite cheap!  Beer costs less than what it would cost in the US or Australia – $0.50USD can buy you a big bottle of beer!  Even some imported beers are inexpensive.  As a contrast, wine is incredibly expensive as Vietnam is not known for producing wine.  Most wines are imported into the country primarily for tourist consumption so the markup is very high.

Transportation

It is common knowledge that planes will be more costly than buses and trains but if time is of short supply and if there are many destinations on your travel schedule, planes may be the best option for you.  Vietnam Airlines is the national airline company and although they have seat sales sometimes, they are not a budget airline.  That being said, Vietnam Airlines offers huge discounts if you book tickets during the last five days of every month (you don’t have to travel on the last five days, just book them when the discount is offered).  Alternatively, Air Asia flies to many destinations in Vietnam and is a pocket-friendly airline.  During busy season to a popular destination, we have found that there is little difference in price between the two airlines.  In these cases, and if demand for seats is high, booking early can sometimes be beneficial as prices may increase closer to the flight date.

For those with more time to travel by ground transportation, open tour buses are an excellent way to get from one destination to another.  Open tour buses are those that operate independent of an organized tour.  They are, by far, the cheapest way to travel longer distances in Vietnam.  For instance, you can take a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne (a 4-7 hour drive) for $6USD.  Or, for around $50-60, you can stop at multiple destinations along your journey and stay as long as you want (as long as you give 24 hours notification before boarding the next bus).  There are many different companies that operate long distance buses – the tickets can be booked at a travel agency or at the actual company’s office.  In the backpackers’ areas, the offices are lined up one after the other.  The buses are assigned seating so it may be a good idea to get tickets early in order to get a seat that you want.  Trains are also a popular mode of transportation for long voyages.  On one train, Vietnam Rail operates the majority of the cars but many other private companies operate tourist cars on the same train.  The private companies are targeted towards tourists but Vietnam Rail cars are generally $7-10 cheaper than the tourist cars.  To save money, you can travel on night buses or trains and save a night’s accomodation!

While in the city, the choices for transportation are the city bus, xe om (motorbike taxis) and taxi.  City bus is generally the cheapest but certain places in the city can be less accessible.  Taxi fares in the city are relatively high and it can add up quickly!  A practical and economical alternative to the city bus and taxi is the xe om, which translates literally to ‘hug taxi’.   A xe om is easily identified – you will see many people waiting on their bikes on street corners looking to give a lift to a tourist.  They can be quite cheap assuming you will negotiate a price down.  Of course the price depends on where you want to go, but if you are going from one place to another in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City, a xe om should cost you no more than 20,000 VND.  As a comparison, a short taxi ride within District 1 may be roughly 30,000 VND.  If you want to venture into some of the other districts that are farther away, hiring a xe om is not only more economical but also a great way to experience the city!

book flights to Vietnam and experience Xe OM
After your flights to Vietnam, you can go around with xe om. This is an economical and interesting experience.

Lodging

After your flights to Vietnam, looking for budget lodging options are pretty easy here!  In the cities, many of the tall and narrow homes have been converted to guest houses or small hotels.  Although there is quite a range in price from city to city, it’s very easy to find a room for $10-30 a night.  Most will also have some sort of included breakfast – eggs, pancakes, bread, butter, tea, coffee, juice and more!  Finding a hotel with an included meal may save a lot of money in the grand scheme of things.

Homestays have become an increasingly popular form of lodging, especially in the smaller towns in Vietnam.  Not only are they budget-friendly, it’s a great way to understand a little bit about daily life in Vietnam.  Most homestays are booked through travel agencies, except for tourist villages like Sapa where you can walk up to the many homestays advertised.  In Vietnam, one requires a license to host travelers in their home.  Homestays turn out to be an excellent bargain!  Meals are also often included and although they are not fancy, they are usually more than sufficient.  We recommend buying water and any other drinks that you might need beforehand at a store or street vendor rather than at the homestay – the markup for bottled water is very high.

Another type of lodging option that may be of interest to you is ‘couchsurfing’.  This phenomenon has been a part of Vietnam travel for a long time and is becoming increasingly popular among backpackers in the country.  If you are not familiar with that term, couchsurfing is a means for people with homes (and couches) to connect with travelers who need a place to crash.  The biggest appeal of couchsurfing – it’s free!  If you are traveling on a really tight budget, we recommend that you check this service out (www.couchsurfing.org).

Activities and Shopping

Activities and attractions are usually the biggest expenses during your stay after your flights to Vietnam.  Places like the Cu Chi tunnels or various monuments can charge an entrance fee and if these are places you’d like to visit, there isn’t much you can do about it.  If you are fond of tours or attractions while traveling, we recommend factoring this into your budget.  It can be an excellent way to understand the culture and you can trim your expenses in other ways.

When shopping for souvenirs or goods, avoid tourist markets like Ben Thanh Market.  It’s very tempting to shop in such places because of the convenience.  But simply go outside and visit the street vendors.  The prices are much lower and they are more open to bargaining.  If you are able to, visit Cho Lon market in District 5.  This is a wholesale market and you will be surprised at the price difference in goods between District 5 and District 1!

We hope we helped you save a litte bit of money during your time after your flights to Vietnam!

Flights to Vietnam: Advices for Travelers

The first thing after your flights to Vietnam is you have to realize that nothing is what it seems.

No one has sex outside of marriage here apparently. Yet the teenage abortion rate is horrifically high. Everyone seemingly has a mobile phone and a motorbike but the average wage is a dollar a day.

Befriend a local and they will spend their last few cents on a meal for you. They will refuse to take anything towards the cost (and you probably shouldn't offer) and they will be genuinely honored to eat with you. You can make a friend for life in seconds. At the same time, if someone collapses in the street, people will walk by. Or worse, stop to stare but do nothing.

As a foreigner the police will leave you alone. They know you bring money into this country. But that works both ways too. They may not help you when you need them either.

Everywhere is manic with activity yet strangely serene. Eventually your ears will filter out the noise and you'll fall in step with the traffic. You'll wonder why it seemed so scary when you first arrived after your flights to Vietnam.

I understand that when you think of Vietnam the chances are your first thought is of the War. By all means go to the museums, the tunnels and the rest if that is your thing. But Vietnam is much much more than that.

Seventy percent of the population were born after the war. And the war was a blip in amongst centuries of other wars. In my experience Vietnamese tend to look forward rather than back: understand the horrors of that war. Put it in context and move on. Vietnam has.

Don't get too tied down with that communism thing. Vietnam is communist in name only. In terms of the likes of education and health care the capitalist country you left is likely to provide more for its people. As for freedom, well don't expect criticism of the government in the newspapers, but you don't suffer a nanny state here either.

And yes.. the opening up to commerce has helped Vietnam prosper. But don't forget this is on the back of a rare 30 years of peace. I would guess that this is the most significant factor in the upswing.

Don't worry about your personal safety. Or at least don't panic about it. Vietnam is probably the safest place you will visit. But don't be stupid. Hanoi isn't too bad but by all account bag snatching is on the rise in Saigon. Just keep things close to you. Honestly money belts are not needed. Stick you wallet in your pocket, like you do at home.

People will rip you off sometimes. They need the money. But that doesn't mean that people will ALWAYS rip you off. Sometimes the price they say is THE price. There is no need for haggling. Other times you can haggle and haggle to get a couple of cents knocked off. Why bother?

Find out what things cost. Don't accept the rip off price but accept the reasonable price. And while we're at it, westerners don't always pay more than locals (transport aside). That's a myth.

And yes people are poor here. Ignore the TV shops, the motorbikes, the cars etc. It's for a (growing) select few. Most people still live in a one room home and sleep on the floor. Remember that.

Learn a couple of words of Vietnamese. Hello and thank-you will do it. It'll make people smile at the very least. Smiling is important here. Smile when you're haggling, smile when you're arguing, smile when you're asking for your money back. People will appreciate it and actually it's a nicer way to live. If you're being over charged make an "oh my god" face, but do it half smiling. They'll realize they've been sussed but they'll smile back in an "I've been caught?" way and most likely offer you the real price.

advices for your flights to Vietnam
Advices for Travelers after flights to Vietnam
Relax...they can smell nervous tourists and it's like a red rag to a bull. At least pretend you know what you're doing without being arrogant.

Learn to enjoy it even when things go wrong. They will go wrong. Vietnam is slapstick and bizarre and that is why so many of us love it. Vietnamese people know their country is bizarre. Get stuck in a traffic jam in a taxi and the driver will turn to you laughing, shrug and say: "Vietnam." As if that is the reason for the madness.

Remember, each cock-up is another experience and another good traveler's tale. Learn to laugh at the problems and live with it.

Oh and they will call you fat. They will ask how much you weigh, how old you are, how much you earn, how much your camera cost. Compared to them you probably are fat -- and answer the questions truthfully -- who cares?

As Michael Caine says in The Quiet American: "They say, whatever you are looking for, you can find here."
It's true. On every level from beautiful beaches to amazing cities. From boiled dog to bangers and mash. From street food to the Sheraton. How much you submerge yourself in Vietnam is up to you. Eat at street stalls if you enjoy the experience but you don't have to. Don't feel guilty if you only eat in top restaurants. Your dollars will still pay for a wage here. Likewise don't think you understand Vietnam and its people just because you've sat on plastic stools and eaten noodle soup.

And there is a seedy underside, and there are drugs, and there is corruption and prostitution. But where doesn't have these?

There is no where else like Vietnam. People who have been here longer than me, have told me that only five years ago it was all bicycles on the road. Now it's mostly motorbikes but more and more cars are starting to appear. Vietnam is changing. And although I wish I had seen it then, now is also fascinating. The change is here but McDonalds and Starbucks haven't arrived yet. Nothing is ruined. Not yet.

You should realize that people either love or hate Vietnam. It is that type of place. But if you at least try to love it then it is more likely to work for you. Come here already smiling and with an open mind and it will be ok. Start to lose your temper over the traffic, the service, the roads or the food and it will only get worse. Nothing works here if you stop smiling.

My final piece of advice is: play the idiot.

Play the big western lump. Catch their eye when they're laughing at you (you are funny) and laugh with them. Pull a face at the kids.

Leave your ego and impatience behind your flights to Vietnam and it'll work out just fine.

Flights from UK to Vietnam - One of the most popular holiday destinations

Why should you book flights from UK to Vietnam? Answer: Vietnam is one of the most popular holiday destinations in world travel.

Vietnam is developing into one of the finest holiday destinations in world travel, and it isn't difficult to see why. Seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a further 7 on their tentative list, a site included on the list of The Seven Wonders of Nature, the largest cave in the world, two of the greatest cities in Asia and incredible mountain top scenery. Here are just some of the fabulous attractions waiting for you to explore.

Flights from UK to Vietnam to visit Northern Vietnam

Hanoi is the nation's capital and is an extremely varied and fascinating place to visit. The Old Quarter creates an atmosphere, more in keeping with Mediterranean Europe than Asia. The beautiful lakes and French Colonial architecture all make this a must-visit city. Using this as a base, it is easy to catch a ride out top the most beautiful bay in the world.

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Nature. Created over twenty million years by wind and water erosion an area of some six hundred square miles of beautiful seas are punctuated by almost two thousand limestone karst formations. Hundreds of cruise boats ply their trade here and thousands of holiday makers now enjoy the bay which was in 2013, voted one of the best ten most beautiful coastlines in the world by influential website The Huffington Post.

From either Halong Bay or Hanoi it is possible to travel directly to Sapa. This astonishing Mountain top city and province is extremely popular with trekkers and people in search of that peaceful getaway. Hundreds of rice paddies carved into the hillside create a wonderful mosaic of patchwork greenery on the very sides of the mountains. The mountain range here includes Vietnam's highest peak, Mount Fansipan and is in fact the bottom end of the Himalayas. In 2009 readers Travel & Leisure magazine voted the terraced rice fields here, as among the most spectacular in the world.

Also in this region, Moc Chau district bears witness to some of the most astonishing countryside in the country. Amazing sweeping valleys, tea plantations, incredible mountainside towns and some of the prettiest waterfalls imaginable make this a very special area indeed.

Flights from UK to Vietnam to visit Central Vietnam

Visit Central Vietnam after booking flights from UK to Vietnam
In the central regions of Vietnam, it is a short distance between the coast and the hilly border with Laos. It is in this region that in 2009 the world's largest cave was unveiled to the people of the world. It was originally found in 1991 by a local man, but the whistle of the wind and the roar of water rushing through the cave, brought with it great fear to superstitious local people. They kept the secret of the truly incredible Son Doon Cave to themselves. It is some six times bigger than the previous largest cave in the country. One single chamber measures five kilometres in length, is 200 metres high and 150 metres wide. The cave, in Ke Bang National Park was recently named in a list of see-before-you-die destinations by Buzzfeed.

On the coast in this region the incredible Ancient city of Hoi An is to be found. This year it was named as one of the top ten cities in Asia. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this perfectly preserved city is one of the finest examples of an Asian trading port anywhere. It used to have the largest deep sea port in the region until it started silted up. As Da Nang growth coincided with this, Hoi An became something of a ghost town. This couple with the area's dry climate meant that it was preserve exactly as it was two hundreds years ago.

Just outside Hoi An the fabulous Cua Dai Beach has become one of the big attractions in the area. It is an idyllic long golden sanded beach fringed with thatched beach huts. The beach resorts here represent tremendous value and are a great asset to the whole area. In 2013 Trip Advisor and Celebrity magazine named this as one of the top twenty five beaches in all of Asia.

Flights from UK to Vietnam to visit Southern Vietnam

In the south of the country lies the largest city in Vietnam, the architecturally beautiful Saigon. Renamed Ho Chi Minh City in honour of the countries favourite son, it is still known by its older more romantic name to most people. Seven million citizens reside in this thriving modern city. French colonial buildings, ancient Asian architecture and superb modern glass towers all rub shoulders in this monument to city design. It's broad, sweeping, tree-lined boulevards, make this unlike any other Asian city.

Close by here are the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels. They have become a popular destination on the tour scene. This incredible network of more than 200 miles of tunnels, were utilised to great effect by the Vietcong in the war with the South. Vietcong troops lived here for months on end in shocking conditions, surfacing only to forage for supplies and to engage the American forces from time to time. More died from disease than from battle injuries.

A ninety minute drive from Saigon are the Ho Tram and Mui Ne Beaches. These are both excellent beach areas and were named as two of the best value for money beaches by Skyscanner. At Hom Tram Strip the brand new Grand Casino is open for business. Boasting large American style gambling halls and some of the finest rooms in Asia, this is set to develop over the coming years. Building work commences next year on phase two including another casino resort and a full 18 hole golf course.

Off the south coast of the country the island of Con Son lies in the Eastern Sea. Part of the Con Son Archipeligo it is home to Con Dao Prison. Established by the French, it had the reputation of being one of the cruelest on the planet. In the Vietnam War it was used by the Americans to torture and intimidate Vietcong prisoners. The hellish tiger cages became a feared method of abuse. Cramped and cut, the prisoners where whipped and beaten and had salt water thrown on their wounds. Shocking photographs later appeared in Life Magazine.

Further round the coast, actually closer to Cambodia, lies the extraordinary island of Phu Quoc. It is here that Bai Dai beach earns its reputation of one of the best 100 beaches anywhere in the world according to CNN. The golden sands and crystal clear waters are a magnet for beach lovers everywhere. Scuba and snorkelling here, is just about as good as it gets. Now having its own airport, getting their couldn't be easier.
